Elewana Sand River Masai Mara

Elewana Sand River Masai Mara sits on the migration route within the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, affording guests privileged views of the plains and hills dotted with wildebeest, zebra and Thompson’s gazelle, as they move between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. At times, wildebeest stream straight through camp, where guests get an up-close view from their own tent.

Recognizing the value of time well spent with family and friends, the Elewana Collection introduces discerning travelers to East Africa through impeccably designed lodges that invite true relaxation, as well as the thrill of a real adventure. Complementing their locations in prime game-viewing areas, on quiet white-sand beaches or even in a coffee plantation, are lavish comforts, including fresh cotton sheets, elegant rooms and gourmet meals. Family-friendly, individually styled and exuding warm and personalized hospitality, the lodges are a savvy blend of high-class safari and low-impact tourism. Guests are encouraged to become part of the local community and conservation projects, thereby returning home with a piece of East Africa instilled in their hearts forever.

Sixteen tented rooms are divided into separate but adjoining areas at Elewana Sand River Masai Mara – “Sand River” with ten tents and “Little Sand River” with six. There is also a two-bedroom en suite family tent with a private lounge. Each of the “camps” has its own main dining area and access to a shared swimming pool. Camp décor is opulent and reminiscent of the permanent tented camps of the late 1920s.

While one of its biggest draws is its location on the Masai Mara migration route, Sand River is overflowing with creature comforts for its discerning guests: 24-hour power, in-tent charging facilities, a swimming pool, WiFi in all tents, swimming pool, shower toiletries, laundry service, available mobile service (though limited), mineral drinking water and custom 4×4 game vehicles.

There’s little to compare with witnessing wildebeest on their annual migration across the Masai Mara, yet it’s even more breathtaking when glimpsed from the comfort of a luxurious safari tent. At Elewana Sand River Masai Mara, glimpsing this spectacular natural wonder is just one of the myriad wilderness activities, which also include game drives with professional, qualified guides, bird watching, balloon safaris, cultural experiences, swimming and visiting local schools. The Reserve teems with wildlife year-round, whether or not it’s a migration month; elephants, lions, cheetah, leopard, giraffe and zebra are certain to make appearances. Children’s fun ranges from guided “bush” walks around camp to warrior training, where the little ones will learn how to make a fire and throw the Masai rungu.

Each day delights with lavish bush breakfasts, picnic lunches and sundowners – the perfect time to gather and share visions of what another day of adventure may bring. Meal times are flexible, and while communal dining is encouraged, private dinners may be arranged upon request. World-class cuisine is accompanied by a premium wine list. Individual dietary requests can be satisfied with advance notice; a children’s menu is available.

Elewana Sand River Mara is a 45-minute drive from Keekorok Airstrip, which is a 45-minute flight from Wilson Airport. The camp coordinates are 1°37’14” S 35°09’45” E, and it is located in the Masai Mara National Reserve in the south of Kenya.
